Emoticon

A small text-based or graphics-based picture or icon used in a message in order to convey an emotion is known as an “Emoticon”. Emoticons have been in vogue since the days of the Morse code. Back then, they were used more as a code rather than a graphical symbol. Only people familiar with the code could interpret them.

Emoticons gained popularity in the middle of the last century. During the mid-seventies, they were popular among users of the Plato system. By the end of that decade, these symbols started appearing on the Internet. Like their earlier usage, these symbols represented a specific meaning and were less graphical in nature.

Scott Fahlman is the inventor of the original ASCII smiley emoticons : - ) and : - (

These symbols have to be viewed by tilting ones head ninety degrees to the left. The colon represents the eyes, the hyphen represents the nose and the braces represent the mouth. A huge number of variations have been developed to represent a myriad of emotions. For instance, ; - ) denotes a wink, : - D represents a wide grin : - O shows a surprised face, and so on.

Since western text is read from left to right, all these emoticons are tilted to the left. Some users from Asia developed a series of emoticons that could be viewed straight. These used a pair of braces to outline the face, an underscore for the mouth and a pair of asterisks for the eyes like this (*_*) Most of the emotions in this type of emoticons are expressed through the eyes, whereas the western emoticons use the mouth for the same purpose.

Since the advent of the graphical user interface like Windows, the emoticons have been replaced by cute pictures that depict the same emotion. Instant Messengers and forums automatically display these icons when they encounter a character string that depicts an emoticon.

Identifying the two common eating disorders anorexia and bulimia

Millions of teenage girls and women all around the world are recorded to have eating disorders. As defined in medical terminology, an eating disorder is a disturbing drive or obsession to eat or not eat that greatly affects one’s mental as well as physical health and condition.

Today, eating disorders, particularly anorexia and bulimia, are commonly associated to Hollywood female celebrities, for it has somehow became a trend among stars that a thin physique is sexier and more attractive. Famous female celebrities who are rumored to have eating disorders are Nicole Richie, Mary Kate Olsen, and Britney Spears.

There are different types of eating disorders, and anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are two of the most common cases. These two types of eating problems can result to serious and grave effects to one’s health.

Anorexia and bulimia are two different cases of eating disorder. In order to identify them properly, the following are the characteristics of anorexia and bulimia:

Defining anorexia

Anorexia is characterized as a psychological eating problem, wherein one possesses a very thin physique because she refuses to eat or drink anything, thus, causing the lack of nutrients absorbed in her body. A teenage girl or a woman refuses to eat anything because of an extreme fear and anxiety of becoming fat. Another cause of this type of eating disorder is a woman’s wrong perception of her body weight and shape, thinking that she is still fat and big even though she is not consuming any food at all.

Common symptoms of anorexia are:

1. Extreme of excessive consciousness on one’s body or figure.

2. Irregular menstrual cycle.

3. Selective eating habit; preferring meals that are low in calories and fat.

4. Prefers to wear baggy clothes to hide thin physique.

5. Regularly skips or avoids meals.

6. Maintains a strict and strong exercise routine.

Physical and emotional effects of anorexia:

1. Exhaustion and fatigue

2. Less immunity to other diseases

3. Always irritable

4. Depressed

5. Isolates self from friends and family members

Defining bulimia

Bulimia is different from anorexia in the sense that a bulimic person eats too much food, then eventually gets rid of extra calories by means of vomiting, extreme fasting, or too much exercise. The known cause of this type of eating disorder is binge eating. Bulimia is basically attributed to the binge-and-purging cycle.

Common Symptoms of bulimia are:

1. Irregular eating patterns

2. Too much or abnormal consumption of food

3. Over-conscious of body weight and physical appearance

4. Constant vomiting

Physical and emotional effects of Bulimia:

1. Malnourished physical appearance

2. Brittle nails and dry skin

3. Self-esteem issues

4. Always stressed out and depressed

Although anorexia and bulimia are generally treatable, these types of eating disorders require support and help from family and friends in order for one to effectively break the habit of zero food consumption, binge eating, as well as the purging cycles. However, if the anorexic or bulimic condition is already beyond serious, treatment becomes more difficult and may even be useless.

Alligator

Exotic Animals: Alligators

Alligators are the most dangerous of the exotic pets. It is a crocodilian, which comes from the family of Alligatoridae. The name was derived from Anglicization of a Spanish word, which was used by Spanish explorers who were settled in Florida, United States. Alligators are found mostly in America and China.

There are two species of alligators, Alligator Mississippienis or the American Alligator and Alligator Sinensis or the Chinese Alligator. The American alligator weights around eight hundred pounds and is thirteen feet long. The record for the longest alligator is of nineteen feet two inches, from Louisiana. Comparatively, the Chinese alligators are smaller in length and measure not more than seven feet in length. Alligators live for more than fifty years. The oldest living alligator was of seventy years, at the Belgrade Zoo, Serbia.

There are many features of alligators that distinguish them from crocodiles and both of them belong to different taxonomic families. Alligators have a broader snout and their eyes are located near the upper side. When light is flashed over the eyes, bigger alligators have a red glow and smaller alligators have a green glow. This can be of help, when searching for alligators in dark. When looking in daylight, it is also observed that alligators have brown eyes and crocodiles have green eyes.

When alligators close their jaws, only the upper teeth are visible where as in crocodiles, the upper as well as the lower teeth are visible when they close their jaws. The shape of an alligator’s mouth is like a “U” and that of the crocodile is like a “V”. Although both the animals have a darker hide, almost black, the color depends on their habitats. The Chinese alligators have a light pattern, alligators living in algae growing water are greenish black and waters with high tannic acid released from hanging trees have a darker hide.

Alligators can eat anything they can find because of the gastroliths (stomach stones) present in their stomach. Young alligators feed on crustaceans, fishes, snails, and insects. As they grow so does their need for larger prey. Bigger alligators feed on turtles, bigger fishes, birds, and, other reptiles and mammals. They even eat deer, razorbacks, small alligators and carcass of animals when they are extremely hungry. Few attacks on humans have also been reported, but the number is on the rise. People get overconfident about this fact and enter alligator habitats without much care, resulting in provoking their aggression. But alligators do not immediately attack humans, like crocodiles.

The alligator farming industry is seeing a rapid rise in Florida, Louisiana and Texas. The purpose of such farms is to get alligator hides and nearly forty five thousand hides are distributed annually from these farms. The hides are very expensive and a seven-foot hide costs as much as $300, but the prices vary every year. The meat of alligator also has great demand, which is approximately three hundred thousand pounds every year.

Alligators now have become very protected and regulated animals. Special processing is to be undergone to get the custody of an alligator. Usually baby alligators can be bought from Florida. Owners are given a special license and must be aware of their responsibilities. It’s against the law of many states to remove an alligator from its natural habitat. Alligator pets should be provided with large and wet habitat, similar to the subtropical, to live in.

Alligators are bound to get aggressive and dangerous at times, which can prove fatal to people around. Owners should be prepared as their pet can grow more than twelve feet. Some owners panic when they start getting bigger and longer and decide to free it from the captivity. But this can be extremely dangerous to residents of that locality because by then the animal would loose its natural fear and will attack humans. When decision is taken for adopting an alligator as a pet, the owner should be firm enough to make a lifetime commitment.

How to develop a secure retirement income

One of the rules of life is that, sooner or later, everyone has to stop working and retire. For some, this is a golden opportunity to enjoy life and do things they never got the chance to do while they were busy with working and raising a family. For others, however, retirement can be a very scary prospect, with no money coming in and yet some of the biggest expenses still needing to be taken care of. Even though work stops, the truth is that life (and your bills) doesn’t. Here are some ways to plan ahead and develop a secure source of income for when you retire.

The most important factor in planning out your retirement income is to plan ahead - the sooner you start to plan, the better. As soon as you reach that stage of life where you are receiving a secure income, you should begin to put money aside in order to draw off of when you retire. You can do this by diversifying your investments - small contributions to several areas will add up when you retire to provide you with a comfortable living - if you are very wise and frugal you may find that your retirement income is actually more than your regular working income was!

The best places to put this money are in areas where they will be able to accrue interest, especially of the compound variety. Some safe investments include mutual funds and saving bonds, in which an investor agrees to leave the money aside for a stated amount of time in order to earn the interest that will often be guaranteed. In some areas, it is also possible to invest in Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) which will not only accrue interest until the time you retire, they are also usually tax deductible in the present.

You should also look for a job in which a regular contribution is made by both the company and by yourself to a pension plan. Ask your employer if it is possible to have some money deducted from each paycheck and deposited to a specific pension plan - many employers will meet the contributions made by the employee.

The most important thing when you are planning out your retirement income is to make sure that the money you invest for that purpose remains there. Many people lose their retirement nest egg in emergencies or even investing in opportunities that seem iron clad, but aren’t. When you make investments towards your retirement, do not touch them. Remember that this money will be all you have at that time in your life, and if you lose it you are going to be in for some hard times, with no chance at recuperation. Any risks as far as investments go should be undertaken with money that you budget for that purpose, and not with any of the money that you plan on setting aside for retirement purposes.

Prudence and long-term planning are the watchwords when you begin to develop your secure retirement income. Make a plan and stick to it, and your golden years will be the best time of your life.

Confessions of a designer handbag junkie

As you are likely aware, I am a designer handbag fanatic. I have been advised by family and friends that this could be developing into a problem, but I am confident that I have it under control. Sure, I have bounced my rent check to purchase a new purse. Who hasn't? There have been times when I have skipped out on my utility bills, so I would have enough cash to buy a new handbag. Who wouldn't?

I have spent countless nights dreaming about shopping for the latest fashionable designs. So what if I want to have Kenneth Cole's babies. I really don't see the problem here. To make my mother happy, I have made the following pledge (ever-so-loosely based on the "twelve step" program):

My name is Cathy, and I am addicted to designer handbags and high fashion. I admit that I am powerless over Prada, and that my life has become unmanageable in certain respects. I have faith that a power greater than Dior can restore my sanity. I have made a pledge to turn my will and my life over to the power of the House of Gucci. I have made a searching and fearless inventory of every handbag on bagborroworsteal. com.

I have made an admission to Chloe, myself, and my friend Sara regarding the exact nature of my wrongs. I am ready for Melie Bianco to remove all these defects of character, and I humbly implore her to remove my shortcomings. I have made a list of all the handbag designers I have harmed with my caustic language, and I am ready and willing to make amends to them all. I have gladly continued to take personal inventory of all my designer purses, and when I was wrong it was promptly admitted.

I have sought through prayer and meditation to improve my conscious contact with Vivienne Westwood as I understand her, praying only for knowledge of her will for me and the power to carry that out. After having this spiritual awakening, I have tried to carry this message other handbag junkies. I have tried to apply these principles in all my erm…..affairs. My name is Cathy, and I am addicted to designer handbags and high fashion.

Real estate deals ten myths

Are high-profit real estate deals only for the wealthy? Is it possible to buy with no money down? Do you really have to know the "right" people? Let's answer by looking at some of the myths of real estate.

1. The good real estate deals are reserved for the wealthy. Of course money helps, but my first deal was a $3,500 lot - which I sold for a profit two weeks after I bought it. Smaller deals, using partners, low-down deals, or just putting aside $7 per day for a couple years until you have enough money for a downpayment - these are some of the ways to start with a little and invest in real estate.

2. "Zero down" isn't possible. I sold a rental property for $1,000 down because I trusted the buyer, and I wanted the 9% interest and higher price. A cash-advance on a credit card for the $1,000 ($30 per month payments) would have made it a "zero down" deal. "Zero down" means none of YOUR money down, and yes, it happens.

3. "No money down" is the best way. When you don't invest some of your own money, you have higher payments. You also spend more time finding suitable properties, and pay more for them (cooperative sellers naturally want more profit for their cooperation). There are zero-down deals out there - they just aren't always worth doing.

4. You need a lot of experience. It helps, but you get it by investing. Start with common sense, be willing to learn the numbers, and you can start where you are.

5. Good investors have a "knack" for making money. Well, sort of. But more accurately, they just took the time and risk to learn the market and to continue their education.

6. You have to know the "right" people. This is another partly true myth. It does help, so why not start the process? Talk to other investors, real estate agents, landlords, etc.

7. Great negotiating skills are necessary. Negotiating skills help with real estate deals? Of course, but learn to run the numbers and make offers based on them, and you can be the worst negotiator and still do okay.

8. You have to have insider knowledge. Insider, outsider, whatever. You do need knowledge, but understand one deal, and you are on your way. Study, and study more, but the best "insider" knowledge comes from experience.

9. Fixer-uppers are the safest way to go. Poorly planned "fix and flips" have bankrupted even experienced investors. Most poorly purchased rental properties will only eat a little money every month, and grow in value over time. Fixer uppers are for making money faster, not more safely.

10. You need to make lowball offers. Low offers may help, but the numbers have to work, and you need a plan. You can offer MORE than the market price and make money investing in real estate. Just learn how to run the numbers before you do any real estate deals.

Stop anxiety attacks review

:
Some people don't even realize that they are having anxiety attacks, until they know what the definition of one is. An anxiety attack is a strong sensation that creates fear in oneself, as the symptoms can seem like you are actually dying. If you are someone who suffers from these kinds of attacks, it is important to know as much as you can about them as to help control them. Thus the more you learn and know the quicker you can begin to control your anxiety attacks.

The cause of anxiety attacks can vary from person to person. They may be caused by an upsetting event in someone's life or a fear of something they have experienced growing up. Stress is a big contributor to anxiety attacks, but the possibilities are truthfully endless. Medication is a known trigger of an anxiety attack, and being less than active is known to be a contributor as well. In reality, there is not a particular known reason for people who experience these attacks, they are in short a body's way of dealing with an overwhelming feeling in one way or another.

One of the main symptoms of anxiety attacks is extreme fear. Now, fear may be acknowledged as a symptom of anxiety, but in reality it is just the end result of the real symptoms. Before fear sets in, you are likely to experience one or more symptoms of anxiety, which lead you to the fear. Chest pain due to a racing heart, shortness of breath, and dizziness are all symptoms you may experience before the fear sets in. In the end, any uncomfortable sensation that is realized which makes you become fearful for your life is considered a symptom of anxiety, and therefore should be treated as such until you can confirm your suspicions.

Because so many symptoms that are realized during an anxiety attack are similar if not exactly like those of some other kind of condition, it is almost impossible to determine if what you have been feeling is due to anxiety attacks, or another condition. This is why it's important to see a doctor and explain your symptoms, so that your physician can run the necessary tests in determining whether you have an underlying medical condition that needs to be dealt with or whether it is more than likely anxiety you are dealing with at which point you can work with your doctor in finding ways to control it.

Once you and your doctor have worked together you can be on the way to resolving your trouble. If it is an anxiety attack there are many approaches you can take to help. Discuss your approach with your doctor. In many cases awareness is the first step you can take to stop your anxiety. What you need to know about applying for an international student loan

Before you get all excited about the thought of obtaining an international student loan so that you can attend college at some exotic university in Beijing or Paris, hang onto your laptop. There are rules and regulations when it comes to these types of loans, and they are also extremely difficult to obtain. However, for the determined and the focused, there are ways to achieve the seemingly impossible. First, know the rules and regulations, and there's a ton of them.

First, in order to obtain an international student loan, you must be enrolled, or in the process of enrolling, at a foreign university or college program that is approved by the Education Resources Institute. Log onto their website for additional information that pertains to your needs. Then, keep in mind that you must be a United States citizen in order to have your application even accepted, let alone approved. And if you thought there was a lot of paperwork for your typical neighborhood college or university, just wait until you get the packet of paperwork for this type of student loan!

A peek into what will be needed is full contact information, full financial information, and that means don't keep any secrets. Parents are likely to groan when they see what needs to be done. The approving authorities are going to want to know about your mortgage, your credit history, present and past occupations and employer information for verification purposes. They're also going to want to know your gross yearly income and references. Students will be asked to provide proof of enrollment, most likely in the form of an acceptance letter or class schedule from the school they plan on attending.

In addition, a co-signer is often asked for. They must be able to verify a credit history for at least 21 months prior to the time of application, as well as proof of citizenship or permanent resident status. They also will be required to provide proof of income as well as a two year employment history, whether they're self-employed or not. That's just the beginning, and by the time you're done filling out the necessary papers and forms, there will be no such thing as a private aspect of your life.

However, balance all that with the benefits of attending a foreign university, and you may just have gotten yourself a deal. Oh, but don't forget that credit ratings for that international student loan are going to be based on your credit history rating, and that fees will depend on how much of a loan you're asking for. Nevertheless, the look in your son or daughter's eyes when that loan is finally approved makes it all worthwhile.

When applying for such a student loan, try to fill out the initial application as soon as they become available for the school year or semester that the student is accepted for. The red tape, processing and waiting times can be excruciatingly slow, so try to get a jump on the thousands of applications that are filed every year.

How lasik vision correction works

The sheer number of different eye corrective surgeries available can be overwhelming at times. And since the matter concerns the eyes, regarded by many as the most important of the five senses, it becomes highly essential that you carry out a basic research of the procedures available. This would certainly aid you in selecting the most feasible and effective treatment. It is also imperative that you have a grasp of how LASIK vision correction works, since LASIK is the most prevalent type of eye surgery.

It is comforting to know that LASIK eye surgery has the most advanced scientific technology at its disposal. It makes use of high-precision equipment and dedicated technicians. For instance, the surgeon employs the Excimer laser, which is an amazingly precise ultraviolet chemical laser. As an evidence of its precision, the Excimer laser is capable of removing 0.5% of a human hair’s width at a time.

At first, a thorough pre-operative examination is conducted, in order to detect astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The patient is also advised to take a few precautions approximately 7 to 10 days prior to the surgery. LASIK eye surgery is performed with the patient awake and functional, however, the ophthalmologist administers a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon performs the surgery with the assistance of a dedicated technician who controls the laser.

Basically, a flap is cut in the cornea using a blade (a microkeratome) or a laser. The flap is lifted up to reveal the middle section of the cornea. Then the Excimer laser is used to make the desired incisions, in order to reshape the corneal tissue. The cornea is carved in a finely controlled manner, since the Excimer laser is a cool laser and does not produce heat, which could otherwise damage the adjacent tissue. The flap is then replaced to allow for natural binding.

Reshaping of the cornea in such a manner, corrects any refractive error that the patient may have. LASIK procedure is simple and the patient may go to work the very next day – sounds like a very much doable treatment.

Bronchitis symptom treatment

Managing Bronchitis Symptoms and Knowing the Treatment

Inflammation of the respiratory tract that includes the trachea and the bronchus is known as bronchitis. This may be caused by viral or bacterial infection or constant exposure to pollutants (such as smoking and air pollution). There are two kinds, acute and chronic bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis usually takes place right after an infection of the upper respiratory tract has occurred like a sinus infection or the common cold. As for chronic bronchitis, there is no exact microorganism that can be pinpointed as a cause but smoking and environmental pollutants are believed to be the major culprits which then may be followed by bacterial or viral infection as the immune system becomes vulnerable.

Common symptoms of both kinds of bronchitis are nasal congestion, muscle pains, fever and chills, sore throat, poor sleep, and dyspnea (common in chronic bronchitis). Basically, the symptoms of bronchitis are similar to that of the common cold. It starts with an irritation at the back of the throat and as it gets worse, cough will enter the picture which may come with phlegm. If the phlegm is streaked with blood, it is best to consult a physician.

Cough is a universal symptom of bronchitis. This may be accompanied with sputum or not (dry cough). Sputum producing cough is a manifestation of an infection in the lower respiratory tract and the lungs. In acute bronchitis, cough may persist for more than fourteen days. Constant and vigorous coughing may leave the thoracic and abdominal muscles aching. Without proper medication, forceful coughing may even cause injury to the chest wall.

Uncomplicated bronchitis can be easily treated at home. Commonly, bronchitis (especially acute bronchitis) is caused by a viral infection. Virus-caused bronchitis is self-limiting and may require no major treatment except to alleviate symptoms and ease discomfort.

But if it is caused by bacterial infections, then antibiotics are prescribed. However, antibiotics should not be taken if bronchitis is caused by a virus. Doing so, will only be a waste of time and money. An over usage of antibiotics will only make certain types of bacteria to build resistance from the medication.

Since muscle aches can be experienced through the course of the disease, anti-pain medications may be taken such as acetaminophen and aspirin. But bear in mind that an over dosage of these type of medications may cause gastric bleeding. These should be taken with a full stomach. Furthermore, aspirin is contraindicated for children and pregnant women. Aspirin is thought to be highly associated with Reye’s syndrome in children, and it may cause severe bleeding in pregnant women.

To ease irritation in the respiratory tract, a cool mist humidifier may be employed. Taking large amounts of liquid helps out to ease fever because it tends to cool down the body temperature. Liquid intake also thins out or liquefies the phlegm, making it easier to cough it out. Another way to loosen up the phlegm is by taking an expectorant such as quaifenesin.

Further medical treatment will depend on the causative factor of bronchitis. If the patient is experiencing severe uncontrollable coughing, cough suppressants may be prescribed by the physician. But the before prescribing it, the physician will most likely test the individual to rule out other diseases.

Another kind of medication is the bronchodilator. This causes the respiratory tract tissues to dilate or open up which then promotes easy passage of air to the lungs. It consequently reduces wheezing.

Again, antibiotics may be used. Other than the reason of bacterial-caused infection in uncomplicated bronchitis is because individuals suffering from long term lung problems are more prone to bacteria infections because of their weakened immune systems.

In later stages of chronic bronchitis, the patient may call for supplemental oxygen to assist him or her in breathing. This oxygen therapy may be given during exercise to avoid dyspnea. And the patient may as well be hospitalized if the disease has become very severe and has developed complications.

To avoid further complications, patients may be required to receive an annual flu vaccine, as well as pneumococcal vaccine every five to seven years. Other medical treatments may also include mucolytic agents, antitussive medications, and alpha1 antitrypsin therapy.

Other treatments that can ease the symptoms of bronchitis are the use of herbal medicines. These can be formulated as inhalants and tea. Still, consult your physician if these additional herbal medicines won’t interfere with the primary treatment.

Are you credit worthy

Having good credit is essential in today’s world. Acceptable credit will generally get you what you want, but bad credit can be the kiss of death. If you want a house, you need a mortgage. If you want a car, you’re likely going to take out a loan. Anytime you apply for credit, the lender is going to pull your credit report to determine whether or not you are a good credit risk. Not everyone is a good credit risk—but there is something you can do to make sure you become one.

Millions of Americans have poor credit, and many are in debt because of high interest credit cards. Credit card companies often target low-income families by providing them with high interest credit cards, but they aren’t the only ones to fall in debt’s trap. In fact, one million Americans file for bankruptcy each year. Bankruptcy isn’t the answer for everyone, but there are several things you can do to get your credit healthy again.

First, make a budget and stick to it. Save money by clipping coupons, buying items on sale and not eating out as much. Don’t buy something on a whim. Go home and think about it first. Chances are you’ll never go back. Remember, buy only what you need.

The money you save can be used to pay back debts. If you have problems paying your bills, you should call the creditor immediately. If you ignore your mortgage bills, you can face foreclosure and the loss of your home. Most lenders will work with you to help you get caught up on your bills and allow you to keep your home. However, if you default on your car payment loan—even if it’s late on a given month—the lender has the option to just repossess the car. Staying on top of your debts will help you on the path to good credit.

You also want to get a copy of your credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Your credit report includes your personal information, your accounts, your credit history and whether or not you’ve defaulted on an account. Review the credit report carefully, looking for any errors pertaining to your personal information. Also, look at each of the financial statements to determine if there’s a credit card you’ve already closed, a debt that shouldn’t be there or any other mistake. Contact the credit bureau immediately if you do spot any errors.

A lender determines if you’re a good credit risk by looking at your credit report and analyzing your credit score. Most people have a credit score anywhere from 300 to 750. Anything 650 and higher is considered good credit. Anything below means you’re on shaky ground.

Remember the key to creating and maintaining good credit is to pay your bills on time, and always call the creditor if you find yourself unable to pay the total bill to see if they can help you work out a plan to help you get back on track.

Top 10 appliances must haves

Everyone knows that home appliances are very important. After all, no one has time to be hand washing jeans and sheets these days, and having to toast bread over an open fire would certainly not be very convenient! Appliances are very important in our homes, but which ones are the most important? Out of all of the appliances available in stores today, which ones are the ones that would be labeled as “must haves”? This article will touch on the top ten appliances to have at home, and will also back up each one as to why it is in the top ten list.

Number One – Stove: Without a stove in your kitchen you would definitely need a fireplace, unless you planned on eating out at least once a day, if not several times per day. If you were to eat out that often, the money you would spend in a week or two would probably pay for any stove you would like to buy! A stove can boil water, bake a cake, cook chicken, beef or fish, and basically cook or bake anything you need. Most recipes in your cookbook need a stove to complete the recipe.

Number Two – Refrigerator: If you did not buy yourself a fridge you would need to live near a frozen lake or pond in the winter and build an underground cold storage facility for the summer months. Food needs to kept cold to stay fresh. That is a fact of life, and unless you want to cut out giant blocks of ice in the winter for your ice box, you will need a fridge.

Number Three – Washer: Washers are a great appliance to have. There is nothing like stuffing a load of dirty clothes into the modern washer and thirty minutes later having a load of clean clothes. One hundred years ago washing clothes took a whole day to do – and that was if you had a small family!

Number Four – Dryer: Just like its nice to have a washer clean your clothes in thirty minutes, its also great to have a dryer to dry them in the same amount of time. In the winter especially!

Number Five – Dishwasher: This appliance is a lifesaver for a large family, but it is still a blessing to have for two or three people. Nobody likes to wash dishes, and to have an appliance that does all of the work for you is always great! Also, dishwashers don’t just wash the dishes, they disinfect them as well.

Number Six – Toaster: Most people like toast, and it has become a staple in the morning. Toasters do the job effectively and fast enough for our fast-paced lives.

Number Seven – Coffee Maker: Even if you don’t like the black stuff, you will eventually have people in your home who do like it, and are probably very addicted to it! Coffee is a great ice breaker and something nice to offer to guests.

Number Eight – Blender: Everyone is eating healthier these days and a blender really helps you to do this. A blender can whip up a homemade soup in minutes, or a frozen fruit drink in seconds.

Number Nine – Food Processor: These handy appliances come in all kinds of sizes these days and they are very helpful in the kitchen. Instead of spending an hour chopping up foods for dinner you can do it in minutes with a food processor. Also, if Mom has to go away for a couple of days, instead of buying unhealthy frozen dinners for her family, she can pre-chop all of the veggies needed for meals and just leave some simple instructions that hopefully Dad can follow!

Number Ten – Microwave: When you want to defrost something fast, or heat some leftovers, a microwave is a very important appliance. Also, without a microwave, you could never have any microwave popcorn.

Real estate inspection do your own

Why should you do your own real estate inspection? To get a better deal. It isn't necessary to learn building codes, and you probably should use a professional inspector in any case. The point of learning what to look for is to have negotiating points.

Home Inspection Checklist

With a good inspection checklist, you won't forget things. There are more than a hundred items on my own list. Could you keep all those in mind as you walk through a property? Did you remember to look for water stains on the basement walls the last time you looked at a house? Bring a list!

A good list is organized by area of the house, usually starting outside. As you walk around and then through the home, check each item on the list. Be sure to take notes. If the gutter is coming loose on the side of the house, write that down, along with notes about rotten wood or anything else associated with it.

Don't worry if you don't know the difference between 12-gauge and 14-gauge wiring. The point isn't to become an expert on all the building trades, as useful as that would be. Just use what you do know. Note if something looks "odd" or "smells funny." Then you can have a professional inspector have a closer look.

Real Estate Inspection As A Negotiating Tool

You can, of course, just make an offer on a home with an inspection clause. Then, after an inspector goes in, you can re-negotiate the price based on his findings. This is a common way of doing it. The problem is that it can often offend the seller, and blow the deal. Would you like somebody to drop their offer by $10,000 after they already put it in writing?

A better way is to find as many problems with the property as you can, BEFORE making the offer. That way you can take all of these things into account. Also, a list of the problems presented with an offer is a good impersonal (therefore non-offensive) way to negotiate a lower price.

You don't have to be a carpenter to note that a railing is loose. You can see if a home needs new paint. Real estate inspection can start with simple things like these, and end with a better price for you.

What to see in agra

What to see in Agra, India

Nobody visiting Agra will want to miss the most famous of its landmarks, the Taj Mahal. After that, it is only a short distance to Fort Agra, yet another marvel in architecture. Indeed, India is full of such wonders, a testament to the rich and ancient culture that inhabits this area of the world.

The Taj Mahal stands calm and breathtaking, on a raised marble platform, by the banks of the Yamuna, testifying to the timelessness of art and love. Its pure white marble shimmers silver in the soft moonlight, exudes a shell - pink glow at dawn, and at the close of the day, takes on the tawny, fiery hue of the majestic sun.

Shahjahan built the monument in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the 'lady of the Taj', who died giving birth to their 14th child. It has been called the most extravagant monument ever built for the sake of love. The construction of the Taj commenced in 1631, and was completed in 1653. Workers were gathered from all over the country and from Central Asia, and about 20,000 people were recruited to translate this wild dream into a reality.

The main architect was Isa Khan, who was brought all the way from Shiraz in Iran. After he was deposed and brutally imprisoned in the Agra Fort, by his son Aurangzeb, Shahjahan spent the rest of his life looking wistfully at his wife's final resting place, just across the river. The Taj remains a symbol of eternal love where the heart - broken Shahjahan was subsequently buried, re-united finally with his beloved Mumtaz.

Among the other monuments that Agra takes pride in is the Agra Fort. Armed with massive double walls, punctuated by four gateways, the fort houses palaces, courts, mosques, baths, gardens and gracious pavilions lie within its premises. The palace is also notable for its smooth blending of Hindu and central Asian architectural styles.

Managing your mortgage in turbulent times

In today's uncertain mortgage climate it's difficult to predict what will happen tomorrow. More than 130 major mortgage lenders have closed their doors since late 2006, and with property prices and demand for exotic home loans both down, that number is sure to increase before the market improves.

All this uncertainty is rattling some homeowners, and leading them to draw false conclusions which will dramatically impact their lifestyle and long term finances. Read on to discover what these misconceptions are, why they are wrong, and what you should be doing instead.

Refinancing Indecision

Many people who purchased or refinanced in the past few years thought they were getting a great deal. But many are seeing the attractive low introductory rate they received expire and their mortgages reset to a higher monthly payment. In some cases these payments are beyond the means of the homeowner. In such situations the obvious solution is to refinance into a more stable and still affordable mortgage.

Fears that their new lender will close their doors, or that their mortgage application will get caught in limbo, have gripped many people who would otherwise have refinanced. Even though they are struggling to make their payments and starring foreclosure in the eye, these homeowners are leery of refinancing and rocking the boat.

But that homeownership boat is already being tossed around on a sea of uncertainty, and maintaining the status quo will not improve anything. The solution is to do thorough research and find a reputable and stable lender. Check how long the lender has been in business; find out how many branch offices and employees they have; determine who their underlying investors are; and analyze whether they have independent sources of income, like consumer banking.

Another good idea is to work with a reputable mortgage broker to find you a new mortgage. They often have extensive contacts among the various mortgage lenders, know who the stable lenders are, and in the unlikely event that your first choice can't close your loan they can quickly rematch you with an alternative one. Plus, brokers can find you competitive deals and save you some time and effort.

Failure to Pay

Another common mistake homeowners are making today is not paying their monthly payments if they hear their mortgage lender or servicing company has closed their doors. This is a massive mistake, because your mortgage contract does not expire just because your lender goes into bankruptcy. If they do cease operations one of their investors will simply resell your mortgage as a security to a competitor. Should this happen, there might be some short term confusion over where you send your payments, so be proactive: call up your mortgage lender and check your mail for a letter which will provide you with the answer.

The same principle applies if your lender files for bankruptcy protection, a term which consumers often confuse with straight bankruptcy. In this case you are also still required to make your payments on time. Make these payments out to the same company, and mail them to the same company address unless you hear otherwise.

Failure to keep current with your mortgage payments will push you towards foreclosure, regardless of who ends up servicing your home loan. And arguing that you didn't know you were still expected to pay won't get you any sympathy with your lender or mortgage servicer. So be alert, and don't run the risk of loosing your home.

Conclusion

Don't allow the current turmoil to jeopardize your homeownership status. Arm yourself with the knowledge you need to protect your home and lifestyle. If you need to refinance do it as soon as possible. And keep current on your mortgage payments, even if your lender appears to be struggling.

Holiday gifts crafts

Holiday Gifts: Crafts

Craft gifts are available just about everywhere, from small craft shops to large malls, to state fair craft booths. You can buy them, you can make them yourself or you can give a craft kit and open up a whole new hobby for the people for whom you are buying. There are specific "holiday" themed crafts such as wreaths for Christmas or Halloween, straw scarecrows and corn husk wreaths for Thanksgiving or more general crafts like birdhouses and dollhouses complete with miniature everything, which can also make great holiday gifts.

Ceramics is a relaxing hobby that allows for great creativity and personalization. There is enough in the way of simple projects that even the beginner can put together a beautiful array of holiday gifts. You can start from scratch using poured pieces (green ware); cleaning, painting, firing, glazing and firing again or you can buy pieces that are already cleaned and fired (bisque) paint and glaze them. There are an almost infinite number of different pieces to choose from. You can make statues, candy dishes, lamps or chess sets. You are really only limited by your imagination. Children love painting on bisque (much easier for a child to work with as it isn't as easily broken as green ware) Check your local phone book for ceramic shops to find the ones that offer lessons and in no time you'll be making gifts people will cherish. You can find Santas and pumpkins, turkey platters and figurines of Uncle Sam. You can put together a base topped with several figurines and make it into a night-light or dresser lamp. In fact you can find something for just about any holiday as well as for other gifting like showers and birthdays or anniversaries.

If you don't have time or the inclination to make your own there are ceramic pieces for sale in just about every store you go into. There are decorative plates and glasses, vases and jewelry boxes, dolls and figurines. There are all kinds of sets of figurines; storybook characters, wild west towns, the entire cast of Star Wars characters, complete Christmas villages, entire renaissance worlds with castles, wizards, trolls, dragons, kings, queens, knights. The best part about some of these is that you can buy one piece for each holiday building the set slowly or buy it all at once.

Other great crafts for holiday gift giving are knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch and sewing. Scarves, sweaters, potholders, Afghans, dresses, shirts and the list goes on. Change the color and the design and you can have a gift for any holiday. When you knit, crochet, sew or cross-stitch a piece for someone you can personalize it in the colors and styles that you know suits them.

You can always hook a rug or pillow. There are complete kits that come with a preprinted canvas the hook and all the yarn you will need or you can buy a piece of canvas and draw your own design, buy a hook and your yarn and you're good to go.

Compare home owner insurance quotes

If you’re in the market for a home owner insurance policy, but are having a difficult time choosing a home owner insurance company among the many that have given you quotes, you’re going to need to set aside some time to thoroughly compare home owner insurance quotes you’ve been offered thus far.

Regardless of how you’ve found the home owner insurance companies from which you’re considering purchasing your home owner insurance policy (in person or on the Internet), make sure the home owner insurance company has asked for an inventory of your home. Home owner insurance companies want to know exactly what it is they’re insurance before they offer a quote. If you accept a quote and purchase a home owner insurance policy from a company that doesn’t know what it’s insuring, you may find yourself high and dry if you ever need your home owner insurance policy, i. e., your home catches fire or is burglarized.

Going along with the above, always read the fine print. After you’ve been offered a home owner insurance quote, find out exactly what is covered, what isn’t, and what you may need to purchase additional coverage for. Some home owner insurance companies may not cover everything in your home; some may. A deciding factor for you will be whether or not you’re willing to move your valuable to another location (safety deposit box in a bank), or purchase additional coverage. You may be offered a cheaper home owner insurance quote if you decide to relocate your expensive valuables, or if you purchase additional coverage; however, you must take into account the extra cost of storing your things elsewhere, or the additional coverage.

In the end, always talk with a live person. Ask questions about what you don’t understand. If you don’t feel comfortable with the answers or with any of the home owner insurance quotes you’ve been offered thus far – don’t settle. Keep looking.

Bring doubles of everything to an interview

Bring Doubles of Everything to an Interview

In addition to a list of questions you want to ask and a pen and notepad you should also

bring duplicate copies of anything else that you may need to provide to the interviewer.

When booking the interview, ask if there is anything specific you should bring with you

(normally references is the only requirement). But if you are applying for a driving job, a

driver’s abstract may be required or if you are applying as a writer you may be asked to

bring in a sample of your work.

Make sure to write down the requested items to bring and make duplicates. If more than

one person is going to interview you, bring one for each of them and then one more. This

show forethought and preparedness. You also don’t want to make your interviewer look

bad by not being prepared if they forgot or lost your resume. Let them know that you

brought an extra copy for them and hand it over.

Chances are this won’t happen, but won’t you be happy if it does and you are prepared?

By brining more copies than are required, you can provide your extra copy to the other

interviewers so they are not all huddled around the one copy of your writing portfolio or

resume.

Even if you are not asked to bring references to the interview, take the time to type out

and print copies anyway. If the interview went well you are sure to be asked for them

and this again, shows that you think ahead and make the necessary preparations. Do not

show up without any special documents that were specifically requested of you, if you do

not think you can obtain them in the timeframe given be sure to let the person know

before you arrive for the interview.

What is whole life insurance

As you know there are several types of life insurance, and one of those types is called whole life. Whole life insurance is a life insurance policy that pays a lump sum on death. In some cases, it may also pay if a diagnosis of a critical illness is detected in the policyholder.

Whole life policies can vary a great deal when it comes to the way they are paid out. In some policies, the payout can be a fixed sum of money that has been decided on at the time the policy is started. In other cases, the payout may be dependent on investment performance after mortality costs and other expenses are deducted.

Within the arena of whole life polices, the timing and the amount of the premiums may vary as well. In some policies the premiums are paid at regular intervals such as monthly or every six months and the premium amount is fixed. In other cases, the premium amount will vary according to how the insurance investment is performing.

Whole life can also have a lot of flexibility in how it is bought and used. For example, some policies allow for the payout over a specified period of time, such as ten years. Once this period is over, the policyholder can continue the insurance coverage but usually at a higher premium rate.

These types of life insurance policies are useful for people who need increased coverage while they have dependent children, but will need reduced coverage later on in life that is all but guaranteed. This is not always the case with term life insurance where an illness can prevent the person from getting the policy.

It should be understood that whole life insurance often requires that the policyholder pay premiums for the life of the policy. Another scenario for whole life is for the policyholder to pay u front the cost of the entire policy, or that the cost of the policy be paid within a certain amount of time, such as five years. This can be expensive, and many consumers simply cannot afford the cost when it is presented in this fashion.

There are certain benefits associated with a whole life policy. Many companies will guarantee that the policy's cash values will increase regardless of the performance of the company. This can make a whole life policy an attractive investment for some people.

In addition, there is liquidity with these policies that other types of insurance may not be able to match. Cash values are often thought to be liquid enough to be used for investment capital, but the policyholder must be financially healthy enough to continue making the higher premium payments.

There can be some tax advantages as well, as cash value access is tax-free up to the total premiums paid. The remainder of the value can be tax-free if taken in the form of loans from the policy. If the policy lapses, tax payment will be due on the outstanding loans. If the insured dies, death benefit is reduced by the amount of any outstanding loan balance.

While whole life is a good option for some people, anyone considering this type of insurance should spend some time with a reputable agent in order to learn the details of how to use a whole life insurance policy to its best effects.

Popcorn and other marketing mistakes in a changing economy

Copyright 2006 Dave Kahle

Ten years of competitive hell!

That was the title on the seminar brochure I received recently. As I survey some of the forces flowing through our economy, and witness the way in which they effect my clients, I have to agree. The Information Age is certainly one of the most turbulent times business people have ever seen.

And the force causing the greatest turbulence is rapid, unrelenting change. Consider this. In 1900, the total amount of knowledge that mankind had was doubling about every 500 years. Today, it doubles about every two years. And the pace continues to increase. One futurist predicts that today's high school seniors will have to absorb more information in their final year alone than their grandparents did in their entire life.

At the same time that things are changing rapidly, competition is increasing in almost every industry. Foreign competitors have entered our markets, the wave of corporate downsizing has transformed thousands of displaced executives into reluctant entrepreneurs, and the knowledge explosion continues to evidence itself in new technologies that often provide radically different ways of accomplishing some task.

The result?

Burgeoning competition in almost every industry. I have yet to meet an executive who has said, "I have fewer competitors today than I did three years ago." Continually growing numbers of competitors seems to be a characteristic of our economy that we are going to have to live with for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, these forces of rapid change and growing competition have brought a cloud of confusion to CEOs and sales executives trying to grow their businesses.

One common response to this cloud of confusion is what I call "Popcorn." Imagine kernels of popcorn simmering in hot oil in the bottom of a popcorn popper. As the heat grows, one of the kernels explodes and rockets off against the side of the popper. A few moments later, another kernel explodes and shoots off in another direction. Before long, the canister is full of careening kernels bouncing in every direction.

That's my analogy to the way in which many businesses attempt to increase their sales when the temperature created by growing competition gets hot. As the heat of the situation grows, they know they have to do something. Then along comes a good idea and, pop, like a kernel of exploding popcorn, they lunge at the good idea.

The good idea can be anything. Maybe it's a media representative who suggests a new advertisement. That sounds like a good idea. So, "pop" off they go after that. Or it could be a salesperson suggesting that a computer program will solve their problems. That sounds like a good idea, so "pop," off they go after that good idea. Next is an advertising agency suggesting a new brochure. That also sounds good, and "pop," like kernels of corn exploding in every direction, they expend money and energy in short term "good ideas."

Like kernels of popcorn, they frantically chase lots of good ideas hoping that one will be the answer to the marketing problems. The problem is that these good ideas rarely have any relationship to one another. And, they generally present superficial solutions to problems which are often deeper. The company's time and energy is diverted toward these superficial "good ideas," and away from the deeper solutions.

For example, an advertisement in a trade journal may be a superficial solution for a company that does not have a system for identifying qualified prospects. And a new brochure may be a superficial response for an organization that doesn't have feedback mechanism in place to adequately understand its customers.

The unfortunate consequences are often more pressure, more confusion, and more energy expended in the wrong places.

Is there a better way? Sure. A far more effective response is to create a powerful sales and marketing system. A sales and marketing system provides an interconnected, measurable set of processes and tools that ultimately result in increased sales. Where would McDonald's be today without a system to consistently produce hot hamburgers? Where would Ford be if they had no system to design and build new automobiles? The keys to success for these businesses has been their ability to create and manage effective systems to accomplish their goals.

Sales and marketing can be treated in exactly the same way. The process of acquiring customers and then expanding the business with them can be systematized. If you're successful in creating a working system, you'll be investing your resources in the most effective way, and producing predictable, regular sales results.

Your sales and marketing system should start with a thorough understanding of the needs and interests of the prospects. Fold into that an honest awareness of the unique value your company brings to the market, and you have the beginning framework for your system. Your system should focus on the highest potential market segments, and develop segment-specific processes and tools to help you reach your market in the most cost-effective way.

When your system is designed, you'll also have a set of criteria in place to help you adequately assess the potential in such things as advertisements, brochures, computer programs, etc.

A well-designed system allows you to move out of the desperate reactive mode characterized by "Popcorn" and into a confident pro-active mode.

Here are seven questions to determine whether you're operating from the "Systems" perspective or the "Popcorn" mind set.

1. Do you have specific, realistic objectives for your sales and marketing efforts?

2. Have you precisely identified your highest potential markets segments?

3. Have you identified the sequence of decisions that a typical prospect goes through to come to a decision to buy your product or service?

4. Have you identified the key activities and processes that must take place on a monthly basis in order for you to reach your sales objectives?

5. Do you have a monthly measurement of the quantity and quality of your key marketing activities?

6. Are you able to track exactly how much it costs to create a customer?

7. Do all of your marketing collateral (brochures, ads, etc.) directly support the purposes and processes of your system?

Obviously, a positive answer to those questions indicates that you have a well defined sales and marketing system in place. That means that you have gone from reactive to pro-active marketing, and that you're well on your way to regular, predictable sales. Negative answers mean that you have some work to do to bring your sales and marketing efforts into a proactive mode to allow you to successfully compete in the turbulent 21st Century.

Make money by creating private label products

Make Money by Creating Private Label Products

Each day, a large number of individuals search for products rights that are for sale. Those individuals are looking for a product that they can resell to make money. Private label resell rights are a “hot” business opportunity right now. This is because they allow others to make money selling a product that they didn’t even create.

A lot of focus is put on the reselling of private label products, but what slips the mind of many individuals is how those products are created. The reality is that these products are created by real people, someone like you. What does this mean for you? This means that if you have a special talent or skill, you could capitalize on that talent, especially if you have experience as a freelance writer or a freelance software developer.

If you are interested in making money, by creating private label products, you will need to create a product that will sell. To find this product, you may need to do a little bit of research. The goal of your research should be to find a niche that people are in need of. You can easily do this by using the internet to your advantage. A large number of individuals and companies advertise or ask about a particular product or product line. If you are able to create what they are looking for, you can be well on your way to making money.

Once you have created a product that is in demand, whether that product be a collection of articles, an e-book, or a software program, you will want to advertise that the resell rights for that product are for sale. Most individuals do that by creating a webpage. Your webpage could be simple or elaborate; however you want it to be. After time, prospective buyers will flock to your website wanting to purchase the resell rights to your product. Before you can sell the resell rights, you will need to be prepared to answer a few questions from prospective buyers. These questions may range from the price of your resell rights to information on the product that you have.

Before you place the resell rights to your product for sale, there are a number of important things that you may want to take into consideration. There are many private label product creators that require their buyers to sign a contract or at least acknowledge an agreement. Some of these contracts and agreements limit the ways that the product can be altered, advertised, or how much it can sell for. While there are benefits to creating a user agreement, one is not required. You will need to decide, ahead of time, whether or not you will have these restrictions.

One of the most common questioned asked, concerning the creation of private label products is why not just sell them yourself? Of course, you can market and sell your own product if you want to, but it may take a large amount of time and maybe even money. That is why many individuals prefer to sell the resell rights to their product. By selling the rights to your product, you are able to profit from your creation without doing any additional work.

There have been a number of different freelance writers and freelance software designers who have found success by creating products and then offering their resale rights for sale. With a little bit of hard work and determination, you could find that same success.

Music the food of soul

:
Music is said to be the food of the soul. There is nothing more swaying and gratifying than good music. Soothing music heals the mind. Entertainment will not get completed without music and playing of your favorite music and songs changes your tension filled mind right away to a more relaxed and tranquil state of mind. If you compose a piece of really nice music you need to write it down so that you can remember and other people will also be able to play it too. Live music is favored at parties and events. Live music entertainment consists of classical music, Jazz, Swing, World music, period music of 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and the 90’s and performed by artists who haven’t made it big and classical music consists of quintet, quartet, trio, duo and solo.

Whether it is a birthday party, wedding reception, a private party or a corporate party, live music is a must if you are not hiring a DJ to mix songs for you. The choice of songs and music may be limited with a live music performance, but it is the limited selected songs and music, which makes the band endearing to people. DJs would charge 25% – 50% of what a live music performing band charges. However, the charm of live music is something that is enticing if one can afford it. Some live music performing bands capture and reproduce the tone of music that were not recorded properly by the ingenuous recording machines of the 50‘s and the 60’s. Performances of live music can be known on any instrument as a piano, guitar, keyboard, harpoon, flute, trumpet, saxophone and the jazz set.

Music is intimately related to the subliminal mind because it blends our emotions. Perhaps you can recall listening to a jingle and finding the tune and the advertising slogan replaying in your mind over and over, even if you disliked the jingle. It just trapped into your mind. Hypnosis is another prevailing trait of music. One of the main reasons for using music for self-hypnosis is to help you maintain mental and emotional focus on your outcome. The music that helps to elicit within you emotions which are appropriate for your self-hypnosis outcome, will take care of the focus. Your intention can then ride of the wave of music, making focusing an effortless process.

Benefits:

Music has quite a lot of advantages despite serious reductions in subsidy for arts programs in public schools, there is a great need for studying music. Band, orchestra, and choir all offer students a chance to work together in a social and intellectual group setting and excel at complex tasks. The deception for parents is to enroll their children in high quality programs and aid them in procuring high quality instruments.

Getting started with aromatherapy easy ways to enjoy essential oils

Beginning 'bona fide' aromatherapy, beyond burning a scented candle or soaking with a pleasing pre-packaged bath salt blend, can be a little daunting to many people. All those little bottles of pricey liquids, electric contraptions, and fancy-sounding blends - how does one actually use essential oils to improve their health, happiness and well-being? It's easier than one might think - getting started can open a whole new world of fun and effective natural remedies that can lift your mood, calm your nerves, and support healing of a great many common ailments.

The basics of aromatherapy are simple, once a few fundamental concepts are understood. Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils - the aromatic compounds of plants, extracted through steam distillation or other methods. The oils act as the chemical messengers and protectors of the plant kingdom. Each essential oil can contain hundreds of different 'volatile' (easily evaporated) compounds, most of which are very compatible with the physiology of the human body. What's so wonderful is they can also do for us what they do for plants - act as chemical messengers through affecting our smell sense and limbic system, and defending the body against foreign invaders by their anti-bacterial and anti-viral actions. In this article, we'll focus on the mental and emotional effects of aromatherapy, and address the physiological aspects at another time.

Essential oils are best used in one of two simple ways: through inhalation, where the oils can directly affect certain areas of the brain, and through topical application, where the oils are easily absorbed into the bloodstream. (Note: Oral ingestion can be an option, but only under experienced medical supervision - further, SOME OILS CAN BE TOXIC, and other even seemingly harmless oils should not be used under certain conditions. If you are pregnant, or have specific medical needs, consult a knowledgeable practitioner before continuing!)

Inhalation of Essential Oils

Essential oils when inhaled directly effect our limbic system, the brain's emotional centers. Many oils have been found to sharpen concentration, reduce tension and anxiety, and even reduce depression. How can we reap these magnificent benefits? There are a few simple, cost-effective ways to prepare essential oils for inhalation - and experience these wonderful effects: the 'handkerchief method', making your own 'smelling salts', and making your own aromatherapy 'mister'.

The handkerchief method is pretty straightforward - put a drop or two of an oil or blend on a tissue and inhale (careful with some oils though - peppermint, for example, can burn the sensitive skin around your nostrils if put in direct contact). You can even leave the tissue (or 'handkerchief, or piece of cloth, or cotton, or whatever) in a room or your workspace and the oil will continue to evaporate and have its effects.

Making your own 'smelling salts' is similar, though your preparation will last a while longer. To make the salts, fill a small vial (dark glass with a good cap is best) with natural sea salt and drop essential oils into the salt. The amount of oil is not too critical - enough that there is detectable aroma, and not so much that the salt gets completely wet. Just unscrew the cap and inhale from the bottle whenever you need a lift, or, like the handkerchief, leave the vial open in your space, letting the aroma slowly fill the area.

A 'mister' can be used infuse a room with aroma - just add essential oils to water in a small spray bottle, shake (before each use) and spray!

Here are a few easy recipes for the inhalation method (Note: in all recipes, the number of drops of oil and/or amount of carrier can be used as a ratio, which you can increase or decrease as you need):

For uplifting the mood and brightening the mind - 4 drops of Rosemary Cineol, 3 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Lemon and 1 drop of Peppermint, OR 3 drops Clary Sage, 2 drops Bergamot and 1 drop Sweet Orange.

For calming anxiety - equal parts of Roman Chamomile, Bergamot and Orange, OR 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Neroli and 1 drop Bergamot.

For creating a harmonious atmosphere - 3 drops Jasmine, 1 drop Ylang Ylang and 1 drop Sandalwood, OR equal parts Geranium, Patchouli and Bergamot.

Aromatherapy Massage

Now for the topical application method. Usually this is described as aromatherapy massage - ideally, this is done with a partner, but self-massage will work as well. Creating your own massage oil is a straightforward process - just dilute 10 - 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. There are a variety of carrier oils available, though Sweet Almond is a great all-around oil and is recommended for general aromatherapy massage. As for the massage, itself, any technique will do - let your intuition be your guide. When you wish to get a little more advanced, do a little further research to create synergy with certain essential oils and certain acupressure points.

The same blends for inhalation can be used for massage, though here are a few more fun recipes:

For a sensual massage, per ounce of carrier oil, add - 8 drops Sandalwood, 6 drops Rose, 4 drops Lavender and 2 drops Ylang Ylang.

For opening the heart, try 4 drops Spikenard, 4 drops Lavender and 2 drops of Rose.

Finally, for sheer relaxation, use 6 drops Lavender, 4 drops Neroli and 2 drops Bergamot.

Don't be afraid to create your own blends! You will certainly find particular oils that you enjoy - and aromatherapy is like that. It is the oils you find most enjoyable that are likely those that are most effective for you. My only recommendation is to change the ratios of oils you are blending very slowly. Start with one drop of each oil in a small vial, mixing them and allowing a few minutes for them to blend before adding more oil 1 drop at a time. In general, citrus oils ( Orange, Bergamot, Lemon, Lime) tend to bring alertness while calming at the same time. Herb oils (Peppermint, Rosemary) tend to be invigorating, while floral oils tend to be relaxing (Lavender, Chamomile, Jasmine, Neroli). This is only a guideline - many oils have complex properties and will affect individuals differently - use your nose as a guide.

Conclusion

Getting started with aromatherapy is easy, and with these simple ideas, you will be able to create essential oil preparations tailored to your needs and enjoyment. This can lead to a lifelong appreciation of these wonderful gifts from nature.

Missouri real estate the show me state

Nicknamed the “Show Me” state, Missouri is an interesting mix of big cities and rural lands. Missouri real estate prices do not require you to “show” a lot of money.

Missouri

The quintessential midwestern state, Missouri offers interesting contrasts. On one hand, you have large cities such as St. Louis and Kansas City. On the other, rural farmlands and towns dominate the rest of the landscape. Economically, the state is dominated by agriculture and railroad industries although typical large businesses can be found in the cities including Budweiser in St. Louis.

The origin of the “show me” nickname is unknown. The state, however, was named after the Missouri Indians who lived along the banks of the Missouri River. A heartland state, Missouri is an inexpensive place to raise a family in relative comfort.

St. Louis

St. Louis is a city with an odd mix of influences. Established by the French, the city has a faint air of European influence, but a much larger heartland feel. The city really had hard times in the 1970s, but serious redevelopment efforts have led to a major revival. Known for the famous Arch, the downtown and river front areas have seen major revivals with old dilapidated warehouses renovated into restaurants and hip stores. The city is also known for a very strong music scene and large parks for recreation. For professional sports, St. Louis is all about baseball, football and hockey.

Branson

Branson is a little town in the Ozarks that has been called the family Las Vegas. The town is littered with shows and activities tailored to families. While it isn’t a place you would want to live because of the traffic, it is a good place to visit if you live in the state.

Springfield

Seemingly the healthcare center of the United States, Springfield is a nice place to raise a family. Situated next to Burrell Park Lake, the town has seen major redevelopment. You’ll find modern warehouse lofts, outdoor cafes and trendy little shops in brick building lined streets. The park and trail system in Springfield is one of the best in the country.

Missouri Real Estate

Missouri real estate prices are very reasonable compared to the rest of the country. A single-family home in Springfield will average $170,000, while the same home will cost $250,000 in St. Louis. Missouri real estate appreciated at a very modest 7.5 percent in 2005.

Faster payments for distributors digitize hard copy proof of delivery documents

Each day, a typical distributor ships hundreds of products to its customers. For each delivery, tow copies of the receipt are provided - one is left with the customer, while the second, a “proof of delivery” copy, is signed by the recipient and retained by the driver.

In some cases, at the delivery point, shipment notations are handwritten on the document and include corrections of quality, condition of goods, the printed name of the recipient’s phone number and department.

The document is then returned to the distributor’s office for filing, and oftentimes, filed manually. So far, so good.

But, then a couple of weeks pass and the invoice for goods comes due. Curiously, it remains unpaid-prompting the credit department to call the customer for payment. The customer disputes the invoice, claiming that payment will not be made until a proof of delivery is provided.

So, the distributor hunts down the signed proof of delivery document and provides it to the customer. Days later, the customer remits on the invoice. All’s well that ends well, right? Wrong. If the distributor is cash starved, the DSO is affected by these disputed sums. Often, lines of credit are hampered and the rates distributors pay for credit lines increase.

But what if the proof of delivery document hadn’t been located? What if it has been misfiled, lost, or damaged? These things do happen occasionally, and when they do it can negatively affect average days outstanding – and the bottom line.

There is a better way.

Unstructured documents (that is documents that are not generated from a billing and inventory management system) or documents that are hand modified once generated from a billing and inventory system pose a great challenge for control and management.

Proof of delivery receipts, signed sales tax forms, customer purchase orders, customer fax releases/orders, customer-provided specifications, and request for quotation are critical documents in the distribution trade.

Digitizing these hard copy documents – via multifunction devices that automatically scan and convert documents - can save an organization time, reduce losses, improve productivity and speed cash flow.

For example, delivery personnel returning from a route can scan proof of delivery documents into a multifunction document processing system that routes the paperwork to a designated folder. A document imaging system can post process the file, capture the shipping document number, shipping date, invoice number, and customer purchase order seconds after the document is routed. Once processed, the entire organization has access to the documents.

Digitized proof of delivery documents can then be stored in a network folder and indexed by the distributor’s invoice number. In advanced implementations, proof of delivery can be forwarded to a client with a matched invoice and a copy of their purchase order, completing the three-way payment approval match.

All hard copy documents can be captured and tied to a specific transaction. Systems are available that can be implemented to capture documents relating to title to goods and group them in a searchable document library. These systems track documents at the point of print. A database captures and catalogs document content. Once printed, cycled, and scanned, documents are captured and combined electronically with other non-structured documents. All valuable working papers can then be organized by customer, supplier and employee.

Incoming faxes can also be captured, organized and automatically processed as part of the strategy. Faxed orders can be routed to different departments simultaneously-to sales, customer service, and credit – enabling faster shipments and improved business controls for distributors.

A decade ago, systems that processed documents were not practical for small-to-midsize distributors – but today’s technologies make it possible for virtually any size distributorship. For under $4000, two strategies can be readily deployed: the capture of proof of delivery copies and the automation of inbound faxes.
